Dr. Laurie Rauch, PHD

Dr. Laurie Rauch works as a neurobiologist in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town specializing in research on the Autonomic Nervous System, brain function and biofeedback.  He has published articles and attended international conferences about his research on the motivated brain.  (Google Scholar Citations)

Laurie gained unique insights into brain function after he was knocked by a drunken container truck driver while out cycle training for SA Triathlon Champs.   He sustained severe brain and spinal cord injuries and lost his right leg above the knee.

Ten years after his accident and after training for a full year, Laurie finished the Argus Tour, a 109 km cycling race around the Cape Peninsula. Given the extent of his injuries, his biggest hurdle during training was coping with the stress his damaged body caused him, the so called fight or flight response.  However, Laurie considers cycle racing to be much less daunting than learning to walk with a prosthetic leg having brain and spinal cord injuries and severely weakened muscles just after the accident.

We humans have lost the wisdom of genuinely resting and relaxing. We worry too much. We don't allow our bodies to heal, and we don't allow our minds and hearts to heal.
